Raree Show

A raree show is a form of peep show taking place in a large portable box, with a round opening for a viewer to peer into. The term is an archaic form of the word "rare," for the rare spectacle contained inside. The interior contains a painted paper theater, with movable parts. The effect of depth is created by scenery that is arranged at different distances for creating a sense deep perspective.

The scene is animated by the raree show performer using multiple strings accessible from the outside. Lighting effects can be produced by opening and closing flaps on the box to let in sunlight, illuminating rear-painted translucent paper.

Elliott and Schlemowitz have built a raree box with a modular interior, allowing for differing shows to be performed. The current raree show is the story of "Boss" the Baker and the Story of the Baker's Dozen.

Raree shows are performed out of doors in sunlight (which lights the interior of the box).
